Israel’s Diamond Industry Continues to Sparkle

Israel’s Diamond Industry

By Sharon Gefen

Israel’s diamond industry, one of the largest and certainly the most advanced in the world, is stronger today than ever before. In 2007 net polished diamond exports topped $7 billion, and continued to rise by 6% in the first half of 2008. Import of rough diamonds reached $5.1 billion in 2007, with these imports up over 15% for the first six months of 2008. Exports of rough diamonds – in large part to Israeli factories in the Far East, Eastern Europe and other locations – were valued at $3.37 billion and have risen by over 25% from January to June 2007.

For many years, Israel has been one of the world’s leading centers for both the manufacture and trade of polished diamonds. Processing about one-half of the world’s gem-quality rough in dollar terms, Israeli diamond companies today provide the stones that garnish a vast amount of the diamond jewelry sold worldwide.

As it looks to the future, this wholly export-based industry seeks to expand into new markets, to broaden its ties with rough diamond suppliers, and to continue its technological development in order to streamline the diamond manufacturing process in Israel.

Leading the industry in these efforts is the Israel Diamond Institute Group of Companies (IDI), a non-profit, public interest company funded by the Israeli Diamond Industry and the government professional training department. IDI’s main functions encompass marketing, business promotion and public relations, industry-wide R&D, expansion of rough sources, security consulting and professional training.

"The impressive figures for 2007 and 2008 point to the inherent health of Israel’s diamond industry and its ability to adapt to changing conditions,” said Moti Ganz, Chairman of the Israel Diamond Institute Group of Companies and President of the Israel Diamond Manufacturers Association. “They also reflect the major efforts of the Israeli Diamond Industry, under the leadership of IDI, to expand its business activities to reach new horizons in both the rough and polished fields,” he added.

Marketing is the Key

As in all export industries, marketing is one of the main ingredients in success. IDI acts to enhance Israel’s position as a world diamond hub – in developed markets such as the U.S., Europe and Hong Kong and in new markets such as China and India.

Israel’s Diamond Center in Ramat Gan, the largest in the world, was built to accommodate thousands of diamond buyers every year. As the number of buyers visiting the center has decreased, the Israeli industry has redoubled its efforts to reach out to the buyer. IDI has led the way, by opening offices in New York and Hong Kong, and by introducing Israel Diamond Pavilions at leading trade fairs around the world.

This year, for the first time, IDI has added the India International Jewellery Show in Mumbai to its annual calendar. This is in addition to major shows in the U.S., Europe, Hong Kong and China.

Tapping New Rough Sources

The necessity of ensuring an ongoing supply of rough diamonds to the Israeli industry has caused IDI to invest great efforts in seeking new sources. According to Eli Avidar, IDI Managing Director, this is one of the most significant challenges facing the industry today. “We are working together as an industry to ensure a steady supply of rough diamonds. We are active in all of the existing and emerging rough diamond centers, and this year made special efforts to develop strong relationships with African producing countries." Avidar noted that IDI organized the Third International Rough Diamond Conference in February 2008, which brought to Israel, in addition to all of the major rough diamond companies, high-level representatives of most of the African diamond producing countries. In late 2007, The Israeli Diamond Industry signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Liberia to promote cooperation in the diamond sector.

Promoting the Industry through the Internet

The Internet is opening up new horizons for the Israeli Diamond Industry. IDI’s portal site, www.israelidiamond.co.il is the definitive website for businesses seeking contact with the Israeli industry. It functions as a daily work tool and venue for the diamond industry in Israel and worldwide, providing industry news, in-depth articles, interviews, photos and video clips, postings of diamond demands, special features such as Wikidiamond, as well as a full index of Israeli diamond companies.

The portal creates a B2B marketplace for the exchange of business contacts that lead to actual transactions. With thousands of registered users in 128 countries, the portal is a dynamic site, with content being updated throughout the day. Every month the site has tens of thousands of entries, and hundreds of thousands of pages viewed. A Hebrew site also exists, as does a Chinese portal, launched last year to support IDI’s marketing efforts into the enormous Chinese market.

Keeping Ahead Through Technology

Israeli technological advances are well known around the world. In the diamond industry as well Israel has made a substantial contribution. Through IDI’s Israel Diamond Technology Center (IDT), research and development is carried out to streamline the manufacturing process – from rough to polished.

From Cottage Industry to Mega-Industry

The Israel diamond industry has indeed come a long way since it was first launched in the 1930’s by enterprising immigrants from Belgium. A handful of factories operated in Netanya and Tel Aviv in the 1940’s, and came together to establish the Israel Diamond Exchange in 1947. With the establishment of the state in 1948 came a large influx of immigrants, who were enlisted to work in this growing industry. Locally-developed manufacturing techniques made it possible to train workers within months.

As the industry began to export globally, Israeli diamantaires became increasingly cosmopolitan, first selling their goods in the far corners of the world and later setting up offices in New York, Antwerp, Hong Kong and Tokyo. With the entry of the second and third generation of Israeli diamantaires into their family businesses, manufacturing and marketing methods have become more sophisticated. Still the essence of the industry has remained the same for the past 70 years: a high level of professional expertise, combined with originality, creativity and ability to adapt to changing conditions. Building on these assets the Israel Diamond Institute Group of Companies is confident that Israel will retain its position as a major world diamond center, and its leaders are committed to investing all necessary efforts to ensure that this is so.

The End Of Fuel? Shai Agassi Launches Alternative Transportation Venture!

Today, the world depends on oil as its fundamental transportation energy source. With the rapid rise in oil prices, a number of alternatives to oil have been proposed in recent years with little success. Project Better Place will focus on the integration of existing technologies and systems to provide the infrastructure and scale necessary to make electric cars a viable alternative to fuel-based vehicles. By doing so, Project Better Place will overcome low adoption rates to-date due to the lack of an established and ubiquitous charging infrastructure to support electric vehicles.

Similar to the model of wireless operators and their deployment of cell towers, Project Better Place will deploy a network of charge stations to provide consumers with the ability to keep their electric vehicles (EV) charged and functional at all times. Project Better Place and its partners will also source the electric cars and batteries that will be compatible with the charging network, and will subsidize vehicle costs through leases and credits.

This for-profit corporation is led by CEO Shai Agassi and Chairman of the Board Idan Ofer.

Project Better Place

Shai Agassi, former SAP executive, has announced today the formation of Project Better Place, an entity focused on one of the 21st century’s biggest challenges – developing a sustainable, environmental solution for converting country-wide transportation systems toward electricity and away from fossil fuel.

The company will deploy the regional and global infrastructure to support electric vehicles on a country by country basis. Project Better Place will establish a widespread grid of electric charging spots at current parking locations as well as battery exchange stations through software systems integration. These capabilities will provide consumers with the energy to keep their cars charged and driving without the need to wait for electricity at any point. The new grid presents a practical solution to address barriers to electric vehicle adoption.

“Our global economy urgently needs an environmentally clean and sustainable approach to energy and transportation. We need to rethink how to bring together consumers, existing technology, and the entire car eco-system to establish the next generation infrastructure that provides energy for commuters and is not dependent on liquid fuels,” said Mr. Agassi. “We have crossed a historic threshold where electricity and batteries provide a cheaper alternative for consumers. Existing technology, coupled with the right business model and a scaleable infrastructure can provide an immediate solution and significantly decrease carbon emissions.”

Shai Agassi, 39 will serve as CEO of the new entity, while Idan Ofer, Chairman of Israel Corp., will serve as Chairman of the Board. The company has entered into a term sheet for its first round of funding in the amount of $200 million with investments from Israel Corp., Morgan Stanley, VantagePoint Venture Partners, and a group of individual private investors managed by Michael Granoff, which includes James Wolfensohn, Edgar Bronfman, Sr. and Musea Ventures.

“Project Better Place offers a compelling business and environmental case for how to address global energy and transportation challenges. We now have 700 million cars driving on the world’s roads, annually emitting 2.8 billion tons of CO2,” said Idan Ofer, Chairman of Israel Corp. “The tailpipe problem has always been the most challenging wedge of the climate change problem that humanity has to solve. Under Shai’s leadership, this project has the promise to stimulate the largest blue ocean economic opportunity in the history of capitalism, with our children as its greatest beneficiary.”

Project Better Place will focus in phase one on establishing a repeatable framework, implementing electric recharge grids through local operating companies in multiple countries. In addition, the company will secure partnerships with a supply chain of car makers, technology providers, and global and local financing institutions. The company is currently in discussions with various governments to establish pilot sites, with plans to begin rollout of the new infrastructure in early 2008.

Business Model and Pricing

The business model for the electric cars will be similar to that used by mobile phone operators. In the same way that wireless operators deploy a network of cell towers to provide an area of mobile phone coverage, Project Better Place will establish a network of charging spots and battery exchange stations to provide ubiquitous access to electricity to power electric vehicles. The company will partner with car makers and source batteries so that consumers who subscribe to the network can get subsidized vehicles which are cheaper to buy and operate than today’s fuel-based cars. Consumers will still own their cars and will have multiple car models to choose from.

Project Better Place will deploy and test this framework over the next 24 months in a variety of launch markets, after which it plans to deploy hundreds of thousands of vehicles annually, across multiple markets. The company anticipates achieving tipping-point saturation in early markets within 10 years of rollout.

About Project Better Place
Project Better Place seeks to reduce our global dependency on oil through the creation of a market-based transportation infrastructure that supports electric vehicles, providing consumers with a cleaner, sustainable, personal transportation alternative. As an implementer and operator of Electric Recharge Grids, it has identified a fundamental shift in vehicle economics – making electric vehicles cheaper and cleaner to own and operate. Project Better Place has created a business model that defines the path toward connecting technology, financial, policy and government players through the deployment of an electric vehicle charging infrastructure that benefits component providers, financial institutions, car makers, governments and consumers. The company executed a term sheet with investors that is subject to customary closing conditions. As a matter of policy, Project Better Place will not disclose countries or car makers until they announce their own intent.

Half of High-Tech Innovations at DEMO Germany were Israeli!

DEMO Germany

Nine of the 20 companies selected from across Europe to demonstrate their exciting new products at the first DEMO event in Europe (www.demogermany.de) were ISRAELI! The prestigious launchpad for emerging technology made its debut in Europe last month, after 17 years in the US (www.demo.com). Israeli companies selected by DEMO’s Advisory Board were: Cellotrip, Decell, Fring, Hurricane, Locationet, MORE IT, Nareos, Telemessage, and Velingo. And … Fring won the “DEMO God” award for best presentation!

Held in Munich, the mostly German audience was overwhelmed by the quality and originality of the Israeli innovations. Due to the preponderance of Israelis, the Israel Trade Center in Berlin was given a booth at the event, where a film about Israeli high-tech was shown to the investors, journalists, analysts and multinationals in attendance. During the final session, the Director of the Trade Center was invited to the stage to answer the question that everyone had been asking: What is it about Israel that makes its population so entrepreneurial and willing to take risks?

DEMO is backed by the giant high-tech media, research, and event group, IDG (www.idg.com), produced in Germany by the MagniGROUP (www.magnigroup.de), and represented in Israel by Tech River (www.tech-river.com).
